The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is a professional T20 cricket league for women in Australia. It showcases the best cricket talent from across the country and international stars. The WBBL is the female counterpart to the men’s Big Bash League (BBL), bringing thrilling cricket matches to fans all over the world. Each team represents a city or region of the country, making it an exciting battle between some of the best women cricket players in the world.

History of the WBBL

The WBBL was started in the year 2015, it was created to boost the popularity of women’s cricket. The league started with eight teams, which are still the same today, providing stability and continuity for fans and players.

Tournament Format – WBBL

Women’s Big Bash League follows a traditional league format during the group stages, where each of the eight teams plays against one another in a round-robin format, where they face each other two times in the group stage games.

Group Stages and Playoffs

After playing two times against each opponents in the group stage. The top four teams of the table qualify for the knockout rounds, including semi-finals and the final. These playoff matches are intense, with everything on the line as teams aim for the WBBL trophy.

Points and Qualification

In the WBBL, teams earn points based on their performance in each match and that affect the table points tally –

  • A win earns two points. 
  • If a match is tied or abandoned due to rain, both teams share the points. 
  • At the end of the group stage, the top 4 teams with the highest points qualify for the playoffs. 3rd & 4th position will compete against each other in Eliminators. Winner of this game will compete in semi finals 2 against the losing team of semi-finals 1. The playoffs decide final two teams will battle it out to become the WBBL champions.
