Fourth seed Casper Ruud and defending champion Iga Swiatek both advanced to the next round of the French Open on Thursday. Meanwhile, several lesser-known players in the women’s draw continued to impress. Elena Rybakina secured a spot in the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Linda Noskova, while Russian qualifier Mirra Andreeva won her second match in a row to make it to the third round. Andreeva, who is just 16 years old, will face off against 19-year-old Coco Gauff in the next round.
Ruud, who lost to Rafael Nadal in last year’s final, defeated Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. He will next play against Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen, who became the first man from his country to reach round three since 1937. Swiatek, who won her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros last year, beat Rebecca Peterson 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the third round.
Other notable matches included American Kayla Day’s upset victory over Madison Keys, and Alexander Zverev‘s dominant win over Alex Molcan. However, Jannik Sinner faltered in an epic five-hour match against Daniel Altmaier, losing 6-7, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5. Croatian Borna Coric also had a tough match against Pedro Cachin, but managed to come out on top with a 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Tunisian Ons Jabeur also secured her spot in the next round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oceane Dodin, ensuring that no French player will make it to the third round of the women’s competition for the third time in five years. The last French player in the singles’ draws, Arthur Rinderknech, was knocked out by American Taylor Fritz in the last match of the day.
