History of the Duleep Trophy
The Duleep Trophy is named after Duleepsinhji, a famous cricketer. It started in 1961-62 and was originally played between teams representing different regions of India: North, South, East, West, and Central. The West Zone won the very first tournament.
Over the years, the Duleep Trophy has evolved and we have seen many changes as per the requirement. In the history of the tournament, foreign players joined in, and BCCI has also changed the format few times. From 2016, the tournament switched to a round-robin format with three teams playing against each other. Whoever wins the most matches reaches the finals and winner of that game gets the trophy. This tournament got canceled for three consecutive years due to COVID-19, it started again in 2022 with the addition of the 6th team of North-East Zone. For Duleep Trophy 2024 season, BCCI has announced to feature four teams: India A, India B, India C, and India D, upcoming talent will be tested for the national team.
