The Australian men’s cricket team is currently in London, preparing for their upcoming match against India in the World Test Championship final. However, in a fun video posted by the ICC on its official Instagram handle, Australian cricketers were asked what the worst present they could give Steve Smith would be, and the responses were all related to his batting.
Steve Smith is known for his love of practicing at the nets and shadow batting, and his work ethic and capacity to set Test cricket records as a batter have led to comparisons with legendary players such as Shane Warne and Sir Donald Bradman. However, his fellow Australian cricketers had some ideas for gifts that would ruin his heart, including telling him that training is cancelled or he is not allowed to bat.
Australia captain Pat Cummins suggested that no batting for a week would be the worst present for Smith, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh suggested that this phrase would be said a lot. Marnus Labuschagne suggested getting him something from Kmart, and Matthew Renshaw recommended no batting for a day. Mitchell Starc agreed with his teammates, saying that if Smith wasn’t allowed to hit balls that day, he would have a bad birthday. Scott Boland suggested a day off cricket training, while Usman Khawaja said that Marnus would be the best present one could give to Steve Smith.
When Smith was asked the same question, he suggested that Marnus would get him something stupid. Smith holds the key for Australia in the World Test Championship final against India, and this will be Australia’s first appearance in a WTC final. They had missed out on the opportunity in the previous cycle due to a slow-over rate penalty. Meanwhile, India will compete in their second World Test Championship final, with Rohit Sharma leading the team.
While Steve Smith may be a rare player who loves practicing and shadow batting, his fellow Australian cricketers had some ideas for gifts that would ruin his heart. However, Smith will be looking to shine in the World Test Championship final against India, and Australia will be hoping to win their first WTC title.
